The current exhibit at Rice Gallery is “Garden Object,” an installation by Rosario Hurtado and Roberto Feo, who run a design studio called El Ultimo Grito. The garden they’ve created at Rice is rather otherworldly, as gardens go. Here’s a link to the “making of” video, definitely worth 2 minutes of your day. For more information, including the artistic statement, visit the Rice Gallery site.
Today I got to see the Leonardo Drew exhibit at the Blaffer Gallery on the UH campus. The exhibit combines grids (I love grids), wild texture, found objects, and obsessive detail–all painted over with a coat of rust. Yes, rust. Leonardo Drew is definitely an artist to watch out for. Houston is not known for cool, but here is an exception. The Art League has inverted a bungalow and this is what they got. For those of you in the vicinity, drive up Montrose toward the Heights (north); the cross street is Willard. The house–slated for demolition, apparently–was altered by Dean Ruck and Dan Havel. You can read more about the installation here and here.
